Luxury smartphone brand Vertu is trying to make a comeback in the AI era with the Alphafold, a premium foldable phone built for executives who want artificial intelligence tied directly into business workflows. Starting at $6,880, the device is aimed less at everyday smartphone buyers and more at CEOs, founders, and wealthy professionals who manage work on the move. Higher-end versions include materials such as alligator leather, 18K gold, and diamond accents, with the top standard model priced as high as $46,800.
The Alphafold combines luxury design with an AI system called Hermes Agent, which is built on the open-source Hermes project by Nous Research. Unlike many smartphone AI tools that focus mainly on consumer features like photo editing or voice assistance, Hermes Agent is designed to connect with enterprise systems such as ERP and CRM platforms. Vertu says it can help coordinate approvals, scheduling, sales tracking, travel planning, operational reporting, and other business tasks through natural-language prompts.
Vertu is also positioning the phone as a privacy-focused business device. The company says the Alphafold includes a proprietary A5 security chip that separates authentication keys, biometric details, and sensitive enterprise data from the main operating system. It also says commercially sensitive information can be processed locally, while prompts sent to outside AI models can be redacted or tokenized before leaving the phone. However, the company has not yet completed independent third-party security audits or certifications, though it says those are planned as part of the product’s next stage.

On the hardware side, the Alphafold features an 8.05-inch inner foldable display and a 6.53-inch outer screen, both designed for multitasking and executive productivity. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, includes a 6,500 mAh battery, supports fast charging, and offers satellite connectivity. The phone also includes a triple rear camera setup with 50-megapixel main and ultrawide cameras, along with a 5-megapixel telephoto lens. Vertu says the hinge uses metal, titanium, and carbon-fiber components and is rated for up to 650,000 folds.
The launch also reflects Vertu’s long attempt to stay relevant after once being known for handcrafted luxury phones and concierge services. The company began as a Nokia luxury handset subsidiary, became popular among wealthy buyers, and later struggled after the iPhone and modern smartphones changed the market. After several ownership changes and the closure of its UK factory, Vertu has returned with luxury Android devices, including the Agent Q foldable phone released before the Alphafold.
Still, the Alphafold enters a difficult market. Foldable phones remain a niche category, making up less than 2 per cent of global smartphone shipments in 2025. Competitors like Samsung sell foldables for far less, making Vertu’s price a major barrier unless its AI tools prove truly valuable for executives. The first batch of 115 Alphafold units is beginning to ship across major markets, including the United States, giving Vertu a chance to prove whether luxury hardware and enterprise AI can justify one of the highest smartphone prices in the industry.
