OpenAI has taken a major step toward Wall Street by confidentially filing for an initial public offering with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The move could lead to one of the largest public listings in market history, with the ChatGPT maker reportedly valued at more than $850 billion. Although OpenAI has not confirmed when it plans to go public, the confidential filing allows regulators to review its financial disclosures before they are eventually made public to investors.
The company confirmed the filing in a short statement, saying it expected the news to leak and wanted to announce it directly. OpenAI also made clear that the timing is still undecided, explaining that some goals may be easier to complete while it remains a private company. Still, the filing gives OpenAI the flexibility to move toward a public debut if that becomes the best option. For a company of its size, going public could help provide access to the massive capital needed to keep developing advanced AI systems.
OpenAI’s rise has been extremely fast. It began in 2015 as a nonprofit research lab focused on developing artificial intelligence for the public good. After years of research, it launched ChatGPT in 2022, which quickly became one of the most influential technology products in the world. The chatbot changed how people approach writing, coding, education, entertainment, health, and work. ChatGPT now supports more than 900 million weekly active users, showing how deeply OpenAI has entered everyday life.

The filing comes during a major year for AI companies looking to enter public markets. OpenAI’s rival Anthropic, the maker of Claude, recently filed confidentially for its own IPO. Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which merged with xAI earlier this year, is also preparing to go public and is positioning itself as an AI-focused company. These companies could become some of the largest IPOs ever, showing how strongly investor attention has shifted toward artificial intelligence and the companies building it.
Even with its huge valuation, OpenAI still faces serious challenges. The company has raised enormous amounts of money but continues to spend heavily because of the high costs of computing power, infrastructure, and AI model training. It also faces strong competition from Anthropic, Google’s Gemini, and Musk’s AI efforts. OpenAI has also been sharpening its focus by moving away from some side projects, including its short-form video app Sora, while investing more into enterprise tools and its coding assistant Codex.
The company’s path to going public has not been simple. OpenAI recently won a legal battle against Elon Musk, who had challenged its shift away from its original nonprofit structure. The company has also faced lawsuits and public criticism over the possible harms of ChatGPT and the wider impact of AI. Still, with major partnerships involving Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, and the U.S. government, OpenAI remains one of the most powerful names in the industry. Its possible IPO could become a defining moment not only for the company, but for the future of the AI economy.
