Jeff Bezos’ new AI startup, Prometheus, is quickly becoming one of the biggest names in the artificial intelligence industry. The company, co-founded by Bezos and scientist-entrepreneur Vik Bajaj, has raised $12 billion in Series B funding at a $41 billion valuation. This new round brings Prometheus’ total funding to more than $18 billion in less than a year, making it one of the most heavily funded AI startups in the world. Investors in the round include JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, DST Global, Arch Venture Partners, and Bezos himself.

Prometheus is not focused on chatbots, search engines, or traditional software tools. Instead, the company is building what it calls an “artificial general engineer.” Its goal is to create AI tools that can help design, test, and improve complex physical products before they are manufactured. This could include jet engines, medical devices, semiconductors, advanced materials, consumer electronics, and drug compounds. The company wants to shorten the long process between having an idea and turning it into a real product.

Bezos explained that the current engineering design cycle can take years, especially in industries where products are extremely complex. For example, asking a jet engine manufacturer to make the same engine with 10% more thrust could become a 10-year project because of how detailed the work is. Prometheus wants to change that by helping engineers move from design to manufacturing much faster. Rather than replacing factories or building robots, the company is focused on pre-production work such as prototyping, simulation, optimization, and workflow design.

The startup currently has about 150 employees across San Francisco, London, and Zurich. Bezos has taken an active role as co-CEO, marking his first major executive position since stepping down as Amazon CEO in 2021. Bajaj, who has a PhD in physical chemistry from MIT and previously co-founded Verily, Google’s life sciences unit, is leading much of the company’s scientific and model development work. Bezos is focused more on business strategy and growth, while Bajaj is shaping the technical vision.

A large part of the new funding will go toward compute, since Prometheus’ AI training needs are expected to be extremely demanding. However, the company has not shared many details about how its technology is being trained, what data it is using, or when its first major product will launch. Prometheus has also not disclosed commercial revenue or named many customers, although Blue Origin, Bezos’ space company, has been described as a natural testing ground and case study for the platform. The company says it operates independently from both Amazon and Blue Origin.

Prometheus is entering a growing physical AI market where investors are showing strong interest. Other companies, such as PhysicsX and Orbital Industries, are also using AI to speed up engineering simulations and design processes. However, Prometheus is attempting something much broader by building a general AI system that could work across many major physical industries at once. The rise of the company also brings questions about how AI will affect engineering jobs. Some people worry that tools like this could replace human workers, but Bezos and Bajaj argue the opposite. They believe faster design cycles will lead to more invention, more products, and more demand for engineers. Whether Prometheus creates more opportunities or disrupts existing jobs, its $41 billion valuation shows that investors are betting heavily on AI’s future in the physical world.
