SoftBank has injected $457 million into Graphcore, the British AI chip company it acquired in 2024, as the Japanese investment giant continues expanding its role in artificial intelligence infrastructure and hardware. The funding was confirmed by Graphcore after a Companies House filing showed the company issued a single share valued at $457 million on April 10. The investment is part of SoftBank’s larger push to build the technology needed for the next generation of AI systems, including artificial general intelligence, often described as AI that can match or surpass human intelligence.

Graphcore was once seen as a possible challenger to Nvidia in the AI chip market. The U.K.-based company raised hundreds of millions of dollars in earlier funding rounds and built its reputation around specialized AI chips and systems. However, despite strong technical promise, Graphcore struggled to turn its products into major commercial success before SoftBank acquired it. Since then, the company has become a key part of SoftBank’s broader AI strategy, with its chip design expertise expected to support future AI computing systems.

The latest funding may only be part of a larger amount Graphcore is expected to receive from SoftBank this year. A person familiar with the companies’ arrangements said the $457 million injection represents only a portion of the money planned for Graphcore. This suggests SoftBank is not simply maintaining the company, but actively investing in its growth, research, and ability to compete in the global AI hardware race. The funding could support chip development, software systems, production capacity, and the long-term engineering work needed to make specialized AI chips useful at scale.

SoftBank’s interest in Graphcore fits into a much larger plan to build an ecosystem around AI chips, computing power, and infrastructure. The company has already made major moves in the semiconductor space, including its 2016 acquisition of a majority stake in Arm, which later listed on Nasdaq in 2023. SoftBank also acquired Ampere Computing in 2025, further strengthening its position in chip design. These investments show that SoftBank is trying to control more of the technology foundation behind AI, from chip architecture to data centre infrastructure.

Beyond chips, SoftBank has also committed heavily to large-scale AI infrastructure projects. It is involved in the $500 billion Stargate project with OpenAI and Oracle, a major initiative focused on building AI computing infrastructure. Reports have also said SoftBank is discussing a large AI data centre project in France and may create and list a standalone AI and robotics company in the United States. Together, these moves show how central AI has become to SoftBank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son’s long-term vision.

Graphcore is also expanding internationally. In October 2025, the company announced plans to invest up to £1 billion in a new AI campus in Bengaluru, India, while hiring across AI, silicon, software, and systems engineering. Overall, SoftBank’s $457 million investment in Graphcore is more than a simple funding update. It reflects the growing importance of AI chips as companies compete to power more advanced AI systems. While Nvidia still dominates the market, SoftBank’s continued investment in Graphcore shows that major players are searching for alternatives and building their own infrastructure strategies.
