TikTok adds content controls to choose how much AI content they see

TikTok is rolling out a new set of tools that give users direct control over how much AI-generated content appears in their For You feed, signaling a notable shift for a platform originally built around human creativity and viral user-generated videos. The update centers on a dedicated AI-generated content slider inside the app’s “Manage Topics” tool, where users already customize how often they see content related to categories like dance, sports, and food. As AI-generated videos become increasingly common across the platform, sometimes indistinguishable from real footage, TikTok is aiming to help users shape their personal viewing experience rather than be passively exposed to a growing wave of synthetic media (TechCrunch; Yahoo News).

The timing reflects a broader trend in the social media landscape. Competitors such as Meta and OpenAI have launched AI-only feeds like Vibes and Sora, showcasing fully AI-produced short videos and prompting creators to experiment with new forms of visual storytelling. Since Sora’s debut, TikTok has seen a surge in hyper-realistic AI videos ranging from historical recreations to celebrity edits, making some users feel overwhelmed by non-human content. TikTok’s new feature offers an alternative: instead of forcing an AI-heavy feed onto its audience, the app lets people choose whether they want more traditional creator content or prefer to immerse themselves in the expanding world of AI-driven visuals (TechCrunch; Yahoo News).

To access the new capability, users can go into Settings, select “Content Preferences,” and open the “Manage Topics” section. Inside, they’ll find a slider specifically for AI-generated content that can be adjusted up or down with two intensity levels in either direction. Like TikTok’s other content preferences, this feature is designed to personalize, not restrict, the diverse flow of videos that appear on the For You page. TikTok emphasizes that the slider will not remove AI content completely but will influence how frequently such videos surface, giving people greater influence over their daily digital environment as AI creativity continues to evolve (The Verge).

However, for such a slider to work effectively, TikTok must ensure it can accurately detect when a video is AI-generated, no small task in an ecosystem where creators often remove visible labels or upload content edited through multiple platforms. The company already uses C2PA Content Credentials, a cross-industry standard that embeds metadata indicating when something is AI-made. But because that information can be stripped away when videos are downloaded or reuploaded, TikTok is now introducing a second layer of protection: invisible watermarking. This new technology embeds markers into AI-generated videos that only TikTok’s systems can read, making them far harder to remove or tamper with (TechCrunch; The Verge).

These invisible watermarks will initially apply to videos created with TikTok’s own AI tools, including AI Editor Pro, and any content uploaded with C2PA metadata. TikTok says this added layer will improve accuracy when labeling videos and will help maintain transparency across the platform. As AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated, these safeguards are intended to prevent confusion, combat misinformation, and ensure users are fully aware of when content is machine-made rather than human-created. The update also positions TikTok to meet growing public and regulatory pressure for clearer AI disclosure, especially as digitally manipulated content becomes more prevalent in entertainment and social discussions (Yahoo News; The Verge).

Together, the new AI preference slider and enhanced watermarking technology mark TikTok’s attempt to balance creative innovation with user trust. While some audiences enjoy AI-powered storytelling, others worry about the erosion of authenticity online. By empowering people to tailor their feeds and reinforcing content transparency, TikTok is acknowledging these concerns without stifling the creative potential of AI. As the app navigates a rapidly shifting landscape, where AI-only feeds are emerging and digital authenticity is increasingly questioned, these features position TikTok to remain competitive while giving users meaningful control over the type of content that shapes their daily scrolling experience.
