Google Classroom Adds Gemini AI to Turn Lessons Into Podcasts

Google is continuing to expand the role of artificial intelligence in education with a new Gemini-powered feature in Google Classroom that allows teachers to turn traditional lessons into podcast-style audio episodes.

Designed to increase student engagement and comprehension, the tool taps into the growing popularity of podcasts, particularly among younger audiences who increasingly consume information through audio formats. By offering lessons in a conversational, on-demand format, Google aims to support diverse learning styles while helping educators modernize how instructional content is delivered (TechCrunch).

The new feature is accessed through the Gemini tab within Google Classroom, where educators can generate customized audio lessons aligned with their curriculum. Teachers can specify the target grade level, topic, and learning objectives to ensure the content supports what is being taught in class. They can also control the structure of the audio by choosing the number of speakers and the conversational format, such as interviews, roundtable discussions, or informal dialogue. This flexibility allows lessons to feel more dynamic and engaging than traditional lectures, while still remaining academically focused (Yahoo Tech).

Podcast-style lessons may be particularly effective given current media consumption trends among students. Research cited by Google indicates there are approximately 35 million Gen Z podcast listeners in the United States each month, highlighting how familiar and appealing the format already is to many learners. Educational podcasts have also gained traction at the university level, with many institutions producing their own series and students independently seeking out academic audio content. By incorporating this format directly into Classroom, Google is giving teachers a way to meet students where they already are and potentially encourage more independent learning, as students can replay lessons at their own pace or revisit material they may have missed (TechCrunch).

At the same time, the rollout of AI-generated audio lessons comes amid ongoing concerns from educators about the broader use of generative AI in schools. Many teachers remain cautious about students becoming overly reliant on tools like ChatGPT to complete assignments, raising questions about academic integrity and critical thinking. Google has emphasized that Gemini-generated content should be treated as a starting point rather than a finished product. Educators are encouraged to carefully review, edit, and adapt audio lessons to ensure accuracy and alignment with classroom standards, institutional policies, and local regulations before sharing them with students (Yahoo Tech).

From an administrative standpoint, schools retain control over who can access Gemini in Classroom. Administrators can manage permissions through the Google Admin console, and the feature is limited to users designated as 18 years of age and older under institutional age-based access settings. Google has also provided guidance and best-practice resources to help teachers use Gemini responsibly and effectively. The feature began rolling out on January 6, 2026, with full visibility expected within one to three days for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains. It is available to institutions using Google Workspace Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus, continuing Google’s gradual expansion of Gemini for Classroom, which first launched in 2024 and received major planning and lesson-development updates in mid-2025 (Google Workspace Updates).
