Samsung is redefining the capabilities of smart home technology with its latest AI-powered refrigerators, designed to simplify grocery shopping and enhance user convenience. By leveraging advanced artificial intelligence and a newly announced partnership with Instacart, Samsung's Bespoke smart fridges will soon allow users to order groceries directly from their fridge screens. This groundbreaking feature represents the next step in Samsung's journey to integrate AI into daily life and is set to debut on 2025 Bespoke models and select older AI Family Hub+ refrigerators.
The technology behind this innovation relies on Samsung's proprietary "AI Vision Inside," which uses cameras and deep-learning models to identify food items as they are loaded into the fridge. This AI system can recognize over 37 food items, a marked improvement from the 33 previously identified items. For unrecognized items, users can manually input names and expiration dates. The refrigerator also tracks what items are used and automatically adds them to the user's Instacart shopping list, making it easier to restock groceries.
Samsung's collaboration with Instacart marks a significant milestone in its efforts to enhance the smart home experience. While Instacart functionality was previously available on some Samsung refrigerators, it disappeared for a time before being reintroduced in this updated form. The partnership ensures seamless integration between Samsung's AI technology and Instacart's product-matching API, enabling grocery replenishment directly from the fridge. This will allow users in Instacart-supported areas to reorder groceries effortlessly, provided they have Samsung and Instacart accounts and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The new feature will roll out on Samsung's 2025 Bespoke refrigerators, which include models with advanced screen sizes and capabilities. Among these are the 32-inch AI Family Hub+ and the compact 9-inch AI Home, both of which will debut the grocery ordering feature. Existing Samsung fridges with AI Family Hub+ and AI Vision Inside will also receive the upgrade through an over-the-network update. However, the exact schedule for this rollout is still being finalized.
Samsung's "AI Vision Inside" identifies items and suggests Instacart products to purchase, enabling a fully integrated shopping experience. Beyond groceries, Samsung's press release highlights its broader "Screens Everywhere" initiative, which aims to bring smaller bright screens to other appliances like laundry machines and ovens. These screens, ranging from 7 to 9 inches, are designed to display essential information, control smart home features, and even provide entertainment options like music playback through Spotify Connect.
The new refrigerators build on Samsung's previous innovations, which included recipe suggestions based on the food inside. The enhanced AI-powered grocery capabilities now represent a significant leap forward, offering unparalleled convenience. The tech runs locally on the fridge but can sync with the Samsung Food app on the refrigerator and the user's phone, allowing seamless management of grocery lists and shopping tasks.

Samsung describes this partnership with Instacart as a prime example of how collaboration between forward-thinking companies can create a new level of user convenience. The company's Head Executive, Jeong Seung Moon, emphasized that combining Samsung's advanced technology and Instacart's robust online grocery platform will redefine how users interact with their appliances. Samsung will showcase its innovations at CES 2025, where it plans to unveil its 9-inch AI Home screen model and other high-tech home appliances.
