Microsoft has announced its most significant investment in Italy, committing €4.3 billion over the next two years to expand its hyperscale cloud and AI data center infrastructure. This initiative also aims to provide digital skills training to over 1 million Italians by the end of 2025, reinforcing Italy's digital transformation journey.
This investment uses artificial intelligence (AI) to address Italy's demographic and economic challenges. By integrating AI across strategic sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, finance, and public administration, the initiative aims to innovate production processes, enhance patient outcomes, improve financial services, and increase the efficiency of public services. Additionally, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) stand to benefit from heightened innovation and entrepreneurship, contributing to Italy's global competitiveness.
Italy North will soon become one of Microsoft's largest data center regions in Europe, meeting European data boundary requirements and serving as a key hub for the Mediterranean and North Africa. This aligns with the Global Partnership on Investment and Infrastructure and supports Italy's ambitions under the G7 Presidency to foster collaboration with the Global South. The infrastructure will operate under Microsoft's AI Access Principles, promoting innovation and competition while ensuring responsible AI use.

Microsoft and its partners will launch programs to skill over 1 million people by 2025, focusing on AI fluency, technical AI skills, AI-driven business transformation, and safe, responsible AI development. Initiatives like the nonprofit ELIS's Include to Grow program will target marginalized groups, including women re-entering the workforce after maternity leave. Similarly, Ital. IA LAB, led by Fondazione Mondo Digitale, will create learning hubs for Generative AI and train individuals in disadvantaged areas, particularly in southern Italy.
Microsoft Italy has also launched the AI LAB program, enabling over 320 companies to initiate more than 450 Generative AI projects in the past year, with 50% already operational. This program, supported by a network of 30 local partners, aims to further innovation, creativity, and productivity. According to a study by THEA Group and Microsoft Italy, AI adoption has driven significant productivity gains, with 47% of companies reporting increases of over 5%.
This investment aligns with Microsoft's commitment to advancing responsible AI through six core principles: fairness, reliability and safety, privacy and security, inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability. Microsoft's Italian data centers will also emphasize sustainability, using renewable biofuels and energy-efficient cooling systems while adhering to the EU Code of Conduct for energy efficiency.

By combining advanced AI infrastructure with comprehensive skilling initiatives and a commitment to sustainability, Microsoft aims to accelerate Italy's digital transformation, fostering a resilient and inclusive economy while securing its position as a leader in AI innovation.
