Googlebook Brings Gemini AI to the Future of Laptops

Google is taking a major step into the future of personal computing with the launch of Googlebook, a new category of laptops built around Gemini Intelligence. More than 15 years after introducing Chromebook as a cloud-first laptop, Google is now rethinking laptops for an AI-first world. Instead of focusing only on apps, browsers, and operating systems, Googlebook is designed to act more like an intelligent assistant that can understand context, help with tasks, and connect more smoothly with the devices people already use.

At the centre of Googlebook is Gemini Intelligence, Google’s AI system built to provide personal and proactive support. One of the biggest new features is Magic Pointer, an AI-powered cursor developed with Google DeepMind. Instead of only clicking and selecting, users can wiggle the cursor to bring up helpful Gemini suggestions based on what is on the screen. For example, pointing at a date in an email could help set up a meeting, while selecting two images, such as a living room and a couch, could allow users to visualize how they look together. Google says this shows how AI will be built into Googlebooks in a useful way without feeling too distracting.

Googlebook will also include Create Your Widget, a feature that lets users build custom widgets using simple prompts. Gemini can search the web or connect to Google apps such as Gmail and Calendar to create personalized dashboards. For example, someone planning a family reunion in Berlin could have Gemini organize flight details, hotel information, restaurant reservations, and a countdown all in one place. This same idea is also coming to Android through Gemini Intelligence, where users can create custom home screen widgets for things like meal prep recipes, weather details, or personal schedules.

Beyond laptops, Google is also expanding Gemini Intelligence across Android devices. Starting this summer, features will roll out first to the latest Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones, with support later coming to watches, cars, glasses, and laptops. Gemini Intelligence is designed to automate multi-step tasks across apps, such as ordering food, booking rides, finding a class syllabus in Gmail, or building a shopping cart from a written grocery list. Users will remain in control, with Gemini only acting after being given permission and stopping once the task is finished.

Google is also bringing smarter AI tools to everyday mobile experiences. Gemini in Chrome will help users research, summarize, compare content, and even handle tasks like booking appointments or reserving parking spots. Autofill with Google will become more intelligent by using connected app information to fill out complicated forms, though this feature will be opt-in. Another new tool, Rambler, will turn natural speech into polished text by removing repeated words, pauses, and filler language while still keeping the message in the user’s voice. It will also support multilingual speech, helping users communicate naturally across different languages.

A major part of Googlebook’s appeal is how closely it connects with Android phones. Users will be able to open phone apps directly from their laptop, complete tasks like a Duolingo lesson, or access phone files through the Googlebook file browser without needing manual transfers. Google is working with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to create the first Googlebooks, which are expected to come in different designs and sizes this fall. TechCrunch notes that Googlebook may also signal a long-term shift away from ChromeOS and toward a more Android-based, AI-native laptop experience, making this not just a new device launch but a major platform move in response to competitors like Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs.
