ChatGPT has reached a major milestone in the artificial intelligence industry, becoming the fastest app in history to hit one billion monthly active app users. According to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, OpenAI’s chatbot reached this mark in May, only about three and a half years after launching in November 2022. This achievement puts ChatGPT ahead of major platforms such as Google Maps, TikTok, and Instagram in terms of adoption speed. Google Maps previously took around five years to reach one billion monthly users, showing how quickly AI tools have become part of daily digital life.
This record comes at a time when public excitement around AI has become more cautious. Across the United States, some college graduates have booed or jeered at mentions of AI during commencement speeches, reflecting fears about job loss, privacy, ethics, and environmental impact. Pope Leo has also warned about public safety and inequality concerns linked to rapid AI growth, while Anthropic has called for a pause in global AI development because of risks from advanced systems that may become harder to control. Even with these concerns, AI usage continues to rise instead of slowing down.
ChatGPT still holds a strong lead in the AI app market, but its competitors are growing quickly. Sensor Tower data shows that Google’s Gemini, ByteDance’s Doubao and Dola, and Anthropic’s Claude are all gaining users. While ChatGPT’s monthly usage increased by 62% year over year, Claude grew by 640% and Meta AI rose by 973%. Claude’s growth was especially noticeable after OpenAI announced a February deal with the U.S. Department of Defense to deploy its models on classified Pentagon networks. The day after that announcement, ChatGPT uninstalls reportedly jumped by 295%, and Claude briefly became the top app in the App Store after Anthropic refused to take part in Pentagon operations.

The numbers reveal a clear divide between what people say about AI and how often they still use it. Some workers avoid AI tools for moral, environmental, or privacy reasons, but many others have already made them part of their routines. A Boston Consulting Group survey of around 12,000 frontline workers found that 74% regularly use AI, a 23 percentage point increase from the year before. More than 40% of regular users said AI saves them the equivalent of a full workday each week. This shows why AI adoption may continue growing even when public sentiment becomes more negative.
Business use is another major reason behind ChatGPT’s continued growth. OpenAI has reported strong adoption among business customers in industries such as financial services, healthcare, retail, customer experience, internal operations, and team workflows. Even as some people worry about overreliance on AI or the future of human work, companies are increasingly using large language models to improve productivity and automate tasks. The United Nations has estimated that the AI market could grow to more than $4.8 trillion by 2033, showing how much economic importance the technology is expected to have.
The rise of ChatGPT also comes as the biggest AI companies prepare for the next stage of competition. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have reportedly begun steps toward public listings, which could bring even more attention and investment into the AI market. At the same time, the debate over AI’s risks is becoming harder to ignore. Users may continue to worry about job displacement, military use, privacy, and safety, but the growing reliance on tools like ChatGPT suggests AI is becoming difficult to avoid. ChatGPT’s one billion monthly users show that public concern is real, but so is the demand for AI in everyday life and work.
