Apple is preparing one of its biggest Siri upgrades yet as part of iOS 27, with the company reportedly redesigning the iPhone experience around a more powerful AI assistant. After years of delays and criticism around Apple Intelligence, the new Siri is expected to become the centrepiece of Apple’s next software updates for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The overhaul is expected to be introduced at WWDC 2026, with a consumer release possibly arriving as early as September.
The new Siri is designed to live inside the iPhone’s Dynamic Island, making it feel more like an always-available assistant across the system. Users will still be able to activate Siri by saying “Siri” or holding the power button, but Apple is also reportedly adding a new “Search or Ask” interface. By swiping down from the top centre of the iPhone, users could launch apps, start messages, add calendar appointments, search notes, check weather, trigger shortcuts, and search the web using AI-powered results.
A major part of the update is a dedicated Siri app built to compete more directly with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The app is expected to support both text and voice conversations, while also allowing users to upload photos and documents for context. It may also include a conversation history so users can return to previous chats. Apple is reportedly testing integrations with outside AI services such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, giving users more flexibility when choosing which AI tool to use.

The smarter Siri is expected to use Google Gemini technology while also drawing on web data, personal information, and on-screen context to complete more useful tasks. For example, users may be able to ask Siri when they are available for a meeting, check for overlapping events, write emails using calendar information, or create notes based on online information and device content. This would make Siri more practical as a personal assistant instead of just a voice command tool.
Apple is also planning deeper AI features across Camera, Photos, Shortcuts, and other apps. The Camera app may get a dedicated visual AI mode that replaces the current Visual Intelligence feature, allowing users to take a photo and run it through Google reverse image search or a third-party AI agent. Photos is expected to gain new tools such as Reframe, which changes an image’s perspective, and Extend, which uses AI to generate missing parts beyond the photo’s original frame. Apple is also testing natural language photo editing, AI-created wallpapers, improved Image Playground results, Genmoji upgrades, and a systemwide grammar checker.
Beyond AI, iOS 27 is also expected to focus on design refinements, bug fixes, battery life, and performance improvements. Apple reportedly wants to improve its Liquid Glass design after mixed reactions to iOS 26, while also making the system more stable and efficient. These priorities could make iOS 27 an important update for users, especially if Apple can finally deliver the Siri overhaul it promised and rebuild confidence in its AI strategy.
