Anthropic’s Claude Pushes AI Toward Proactive Work

Anthropic’s Claude is quickly moving beyond the idea of a simple chatbot and toward a future where AI can understand a person’s work, habits, and needs before they even ask for help. Cat Wu, Anthropic’s head of product for Claude Code and Cowork, recently explained that the next major step for AI assistants will be “proactivity.” Instead of only responding when users type a prompt, future AI systems could recognize patterns, set up automations, and help with tasks before users realize they need support.

Wu shared these ideas during the second annual Code with Claude conference in San Francisco, where she discussed Anthropic’s product strategy and the future of Claude. Since joining Anthropic in August 2024, Wu has played a major role in helping Claude grow from a basic conversational chatbot into a stronger coding and productivity tool. She works closely with Boris Cherny, a key technical leader and creator of Claude Code, with the pair even being described as Anthropic’s “Batman and Robin” because of their impact on the company’s product development.

According to Wu, Anthropic’s focus is not on reacting to competitors, but on staying at the frontier of AI development. She explained that if a company spends too much time copying competitors, it can end up falling weeks or even months behind. Instead, Anthropic is trying to build for a future where AI models continue improving rapidly. The company released at least six models last year and has already kept a strong pace in 2026, with Wu saying she hopes that speed continues.

At the same time, Anthropic is trying to balance fast progress with safety. Wu pointed to the company’s Glasswing initiative, which gave a small group of partner organizations, including Amazon, Apple, CrowdStrike, and Microsoft, access to its cybersecurity model, Mythos. Unlike many other Claude models, Mythos was not released to the public because of concerns that its ability to scan codebases for software vulnerabilities could be misused by bad actors. This shows how Anthropic is trying to expand AI capabilities while still being careful about how powerful tools are deployed.

Wu also spoke about how AI agents could change the future of work. She believes people may eventually manage groups of AI agents that help complete different tasks, but she also made it clear that humans will still need real skills and expertise. In her view, it is difficult to manage AI agents properly if the person does not understand the work themselves. Managers will need to know how to spot mistakes, improve unclear instructions, and understand whether an AI misunderstood a request. Although some worry that AI agents could reduce team sizes, Wu framed the technology more as a way to remove boring and repetitive tasks from people’s daily work. Her hope is that AI can handle responsibilities like emails, drafting replies, coding support, and customer service routines so people have more time to focus on creative and higher-value work.

Anthropic’s vision comes during a time of major momentum for the company. Reports suggest Anthropic may be seeking a funding round that could value it at nearly $950 billion, possibly putting it ahead of OpenAI’s recent valuation. The company has also reportedly gained strong business interest, with Claude quadrupling its market share since May 2025 and even overtaking OpenAI among business customers. With Claude becoming more proactive, Anthropic is positioning itself as one of the most serious leaders in the future of workplace AI.
